Kahili Desert is the dominant geographical feature covering roughly two-thirds of the country. At the northern edge of this arid area lies the Okavango Delta. This delta region is created where the Okavango River spills its water over an area covering some 7,500 square miles. The river’s water then is absorbed into the desert, never reaching the ocean. The inland Okavango delta, with its permanent supply of water, supports a profusion of plant and animal life - there are more than 160 mammal species. Botswana, the world’s fourth largest diamond producer, has made this country less dependent upon tourist dollars, than its poorer neighbors. As a result, it can afford to keep its wilderness areas truly wild. Botswana strictly limits the number of people allowed to stay overnight in the reserves, so the “tourist density” is very low.
